What are Wisdom Teeth?

In short, wisdom teeth are the third set of molars. Although most patients have four, some have three, two, or even none at all! Genetics play a huge role. So, if your parents didn’t have wisdom teeth (or theirs grew in straight), then you may not need to have them removed!

Why Do Wisdom Teeth Need to Be Removed?

While our paleolithic ancestors used their wisdom teeth to help them chew hard nuts and tough meats, today, we don’t have much use for them. In fact, in many cases, patients with third molars are often advised to have them extracted to reduce their risk of developing future oral health issues, like infections and crowding.

What to Expect from the Wisdom Teeth Procedure

If your wisdom teeth are protruding through the gumline, we can easily remove them without the need for surgery. We’ll gently wiggle them free of their connective tissues and lift them out of their socket. However, if they are impacted below the gumline, surgical intervention will be necessary. To gain access to them, we’ll make a small incision in the gumline that will allow us to remove them from their supportive hard tissues beneath. We’ll close the gums to allow them to heal shut and provide you with detailed post-operative instructions to ensure you make a speedy and complication-free recovery.

Recovering from Wisdom Teeth Extraction

When you think of recovering from a wisdom tooth extraction, you might imagine cuddling up on the couch with a pint of ice cream and watching Netflix. While that can certainly be part of it, it’s also of the utmost importance that you:

  • Take care of the extraction site and keep your mouth clean
  • Avoid smoking, spitting, or using a straw
  • Take OTC pain medication (as directed on the label)
  • Stick to soft foods, like plain yogurt
  • Don’t exercise or participate in any strenuous physical activities

Of course, our Mansfield dental team will provide you with a more comprehensive list of aftercare instructions following the procedure. If you have any questions, you’re always welcome to give us a call as well!
